Do I really need a TV license?

Wait? What? A license for a TV? Yes, just when you think you know everything about the UK, here comes the TV license!

What is a TV License?

A TV license allows you to watch broadcasted TV (including BBC iPlayer) in the UK. It’s a small fee that is paid to the government either monthly or annually.

Proof of this payment is mailed to you in a letter or can be verified online. Don’t worry, you won’t need to carry it in your wallet.

Why are TV Licenses necessary?

It’s essentially a way to fund public broadcasting (i.e. the BBC in the UK). Because it’s publicly funded, the BBC is meant to be impartial and doesn’t show adverts (aka commercials), except ads for other BBC shows.

Some other countries in Europe also have something that’s like a TV license, called a broadcasting fee or broadcasting receiving license. These also fund public broadcasting.

Do I need a TV License?

If you plan on watching Freeview (non-cable channels), cable (via BT, Sky, Virgin, etc) or BBC iPlayer, you will need an active TV license.

You do not need a TV license to stream TV only (via Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, etc) , watch via apps like You Tube or watch on demand services like All4. It’s also not needed to watch DVDs.

If you are renting, review your rental agreement to make sure that it’s not already included. Sometimes this is included in student accommodations or flat shares.

How do I get a TV License?

It’s pretty simple. Go to https://www.gov.uk/tv-licence and enter your name, address, payment details and plan.

How much does it cost?

As of 2023, a TV license costs 159 GBP per year. This can be paid annually or you can break it up into monthly fees.

What happens if I leave the UK but have paid in advance for my TV License?

You can cancel your TV license, and if necessary, request a refund for months that you have paid after you left the country online here: https://forms.tvlicensing.co.uk/Viewer?formName=Refund%20and%20cancellation%20request%20(1.0).wdf

Simply provide your TV License Number, the reason for cancellation (moving abroad) and the date of your move. I can tell you from experience that it does take a few weeks to get a refund but it wasn’t a hassle.

What happens if I move in the UK, does my license come with me?

Yes! You can move a TV license with you at no additional fee. Simply log into your TV License account and provide details on your change of address including when it takes place.

What happens if I don’t pay my TV License?

If you’re caught watching or recording TV without a license, you’re subject to a fee of up to 1000 GBP!!!

How will they know that I’ve got a TV?

If you buy a TV in the UK, the store will ask for your name and address and report it to the TV Licensing agency.
